To Hear This Week

Hanne Hukkelberg: Rykestrasse 68 (Nettwerk) - Norway’s Hanne Hukkelberg carefully crafts endearing post-folk with a jazz infected cinematic ambiance.  An array of instruments and well placed found sounds bring out the drama, while her honeyed vocals contrast with the emotional turmoil at every turn.  [Pitchfork Rating: 7.6] Highly Recommended.

Born Ruffians: Red, Yellow and Blue (Warp) – The debut LP from Toronto trio Born Ruffians takes 1950s  rock'n'roll and filters it through 1970s punk.  Primary colors can go anywhere, and they do, by blending a sophisticated pallet of acoustic and electric elements, with vivid harmonies and the unexpected.  Highly Recommended.

Yip-Yip: Two Kings of the Same Kingdom (S.A.F.) - Florida duo Yip-Yip augment their arsenal of vintage Moog, Korg and Casio synths with some organ, cymbals / gong and saxophone.  It’s like Mario Bros. drop some acid and discover a whole new world where warped instrumental video-game soundscapes open into carbon based worlds.  Recommended.

Paul Bley Trio: Closer (ESP Disk) - This newly remastered 1965 session from avant-garde pianist Paul Bley and like-minded accompanists drummer Barry Altschul and bassist Steve Swallow packs some inspired playing into tight packages. Intricately woven works of Carla Bley, Annette Peacock and Ornette Coleman sparkle with inventive interplay.  Recommended.

Pacific Uv: Longplay 2 (warm) - The sophomore LP from dreamy space rock ensemble Pacific Uv utilize guitars, keys, electronics and strings to sonically drifting through rolling hills.  As the momentum builds, you’re thrust into heavier space realms, only to glide back to the shadowed hills of home.  Recommended.  Play 1  2  3  6

Torpedo Boyz: Cum on Feel the Boyz (Sounds from the Roof) – From below the surface, Japanese crew Torpedo Boyz will catch you by surprise with their playful kitsch-electro & funk-hop. A light-hearted party LP that taps trashy 1970s disco and old-school hip-hop of the early '80s for a absolute guilty pleasure get-down.  Highly Recommended.

Woelv: Tout Seui Dans la Forêt en Plein Jour, Avez-Vous Peur? (K) -  Woelv is French Quebec artist Geneviève Castrée.  On "alone in the forest in the middle of the day, are you scared?" she explores dark material.  Her delicate voice is layered and loop over a shadowed musical stand of acoustic guitar, distorted keys and tribal drums.  Highly Recommended.

HorrorPops: Kiss Kiss Kill Kill (Hellcat) - Danish psychobilly sextet find inspiration in the bygone cinema.  Tales of love an murder come to life in an energetic romp through b-movie darkness, where rock’n’roll blends with punk, surf and ska.  Good.

Cryptacize: Dig That Treasure (Asthmatic Kitty) - California asthmatic kittens Chris Cohen (The Curtains) and Nedelle Torrisi get giddy on lo-fi indie-pop of autoharp, guitars, strings, drums and boy/girl vocals.  It’s a potential filled experimental mix of often unfinished ideas.  Good.

Thao with the Get Down Stay Down: We Brave Bee Stings and All (Kill Rock Stars) - Virginia-bred Thao writes some playful songs they come off wonderfully.  The robust, detailed arrangements blend boyant indie rock, Americana, soul and folk in ways they’re all heard, while her rich, breathy voice recalls Cat Power.  Highly Recommended.
